This series came with high recommendations to me from a fellow manga blogger. If I had seen just the title and the cover art for this volume, I would have scrolled over to the next "recommended" manga on my Amazon list. The cover art background looks overwhelmingly girlie, and the couple on the cover looked too cliche for my shoujo veteran self. In short I judged the book by its cover, it seemed like your typical most unnoticeable girl in school catches the eye of the most desirable boy in school by being "different" from the rest plot that I've read quite a few times over. There are very few shoujo heroines I've read that have been different from the pack in a noticeable way. Their way of thinking may be unique within their own little manga world, but when you take out the heroine of each shoujo manga and face them off...there are very few that still stand on top as being unique. Kanako is one of the few that have made that cut for me, and this series stands a good chance at being one of the most entertaining shoujo series I've ever encountered. And for me, this is saying a lot, Skip Beat! has been the indisputable ruler of my shoujo world for the last 3-4 years.

Plot Summary
Kanoko is a 3rd year middle school student that has dedicated herself as an observer of her classmates. She doesn't make friends with those around her and limits her interactions so that she can remain unbiased. As a result she tends to be able to quickly understand the hidden personalities of those around her, and figure out their secrets. Even though Kanoko believes that remaining impartial and removed is the most important part of her life, she frequently will step in and get involved in situations to right wrongs.

This story was meant to be a stand alone single chapter (according to the author's notes), however due to the overwhelming response of fans The Secret Notes of Lady Kanoko was made into a series. Kanoko is placed into different surroundings in almost every chapter, for some reason she is transferred to different schools a lot. This gives her a constant stream of fresh new characters and situations to observe. I know this sounds like a cheap trick to stop plot from getting stale, but in this series it's a very successful approach that is what helps make this story unique. It's like I get to experience the sensation of starting a fresh shoujo manga over and over again within each chapter. Although past characters aren't simply forgotten, every character Kanoko comes across in her journeys has the potential to pop up again. And thank goodness for that, after all, what would a shoujo heroine be if she didn't have at least a few somewhat consistent main characters in her life

I have to tip my hat to Tokyopop, this was an amazing shoujo series to be brought over the United States. I recommend it to all those who love shoujo, ESPECIALLY those that have read a considerable number of series and are tired of the same old plot. This series plays through those same old shoujo stories you've seen hundreds of times before, except gives them a refreshing new point of view. The main heroine Kanoko is especially amusing as she easily sidesteps and puts down the tyical shoujo traps laid down by classmates that other heroines always seem to fall for far too easily. Her gruff and sarcastic personality has surely won my heart. I can't stop myself from casually re-reading this volume over and over. I can't wait until more volumes are released.

Kanoko is adorable, with a rounded bob haircut, glasses, and an extreme dislike of her age group. Each chapter features her indulging in her favorite pastime watching her classmates and recording their feelings and actions. She treats them as her soap opera, only she winds up getting dragged into their interactions. While she’s congratulating herself on her objectivity and powers of observation, we see how much she’s also swayed by the right word or the thoughtful gesture. She praises herself for choosing to have no friends, but it’s making a virtue of necessity.

Don’t worry for her, though, because Kanoko also has a habit of finding herself involved in her little experiments. I like that, for all Kanoko is her own little bundle of cliches, she rips the lid off the standard shojo stereotypes, with little patience for game-playing. Among other situations, here she takes on the obnoxious teacher, the artsy type seeking to be the center of attention, and the plain girl who wants a makeover to catch the cute boy. Some of Kanoko’s behavior reminded me of fandom, with her lists and notebooks and her lack of patience for those who don’t understand her shorthand nicknames for those she watches. She’s suspicious and sarcastic and plain-spoken, all of which makes her endearing to me.

I thought, when I first heard that she moves schools and meets a whole new group of people in the second chapter, that it would seem artificial (in order to allow the artist to repeat her gimmick) or disappointing (since we’d miss the characters we’d briefly gotten to know). Neither is true. A new cast allows for new observations and more openings for humor. Kanoko’s cynicism allows for her to be leery of what she sees as “friendship games”, but it’s important to learn that not everyone is pretending just for popularity or advancement. There’s also the possibility of true friendship, and that’s what gives The Secret Notes of Lady Kanoko its heart. (Review originally posted at ComicsWorthReading.com.)

This manga is one of the most unexpected pleasures this year. The non-formulaic snarkiness, fighting back against bullies and rumor-mongering and genuine joy in being smart and mean endeared Kanako to me immediately.
It's kind of sad to see the series being dropped because of the publisher company but the manga itself is interesting. The story takes place in a school setting, a girl who constantly switches school who "helps" fellow classmates in a way whether or not she should. Just fyi, this manga has a sequel to this in but if you search somewhere else, there is a scanlation group that provide translated manga thats viewable on the web for those who want to read this but can't read Japan.
I already finished reading this manga online before I bought this book.
I love this manga that I still read it after I'm done (which I rarely do).
The cover is really deceiving, it's actually the author's idea, this book has little romance but it make up for comedy (and friendship I guess). The heroine is odd and clever in her own way.
Though I must warn you that this book volume 3 (the last volume) is not available in the US.
And if you want more, there is a sequel of this manga called 'Koi Dano Ai Dano' by the same author (mangaka). And the sequel has lots of love.
