If I had read this as my first Mark Edwards book; I am not sure that I would have read his other books.

This book was definitely not my favorite. "Because She Loves Me" was my favorite book by this author due to all the twists and turns. My 2nd favorite book by Edwards is "Follow You Home." And my least favorite was the book, "What You Wish For."

This book is Mark Edwards' 1st solo novel and though it was a lot of fun to read and I read it quickly, I felt unfulfilled.

I would have liked it better if Jamie and Kirsty had made a false assumption on who the dastardly neighbor was and I would have liked if other neighbors had also been involved. Or a little more of the Occult.

The character of Jamie was just too weak for me and though this books flows well; Edwards' later works have a much better writing style.

I'm going to read a short story by this author next called, "Kissing Games."

I am not a Brit but I really enjoy these books and especially enjoy looking up all the British slang through my Kindle.

His characters in his later work are so developed and the surroundings are so clear it is like watching a movie.

I will devour all of his coming books.

The Magpies A Psychological Thriller Mark Edwards 9781483911892 Books Reviews

Not a very psychologically thrilling story, but a relatively interesting story based on real life events about nightmare neighbours. If you’ve ever had difficult neighbours, you’ll probably enjoy this book, and then thank your lucky stars they didn’t do to you the things these neighbours did. I didn’t like the coarse language used and the explicit sex scenes in the book which I felt didn’t need to be so graphic. I also didn’t like that there was no big twist in the story and things were left unexplained, it just felt like a retelling of events that happened to this young couple. Make sure to read the Author’s Letter at the end to tie up those loose ends. I didn’t get the title of this book until I read those notes because magpies are not mentioned anywhere in the story - it’s a metaphor, and this was lost on me until I read the notes because it seems that the magpies in Australia are a completely different type of bird to those in the UK. I think this book would be better as a movie and be more suspenseful and horrifying from a visual aspect, as the author’s writing was okay but didn’t really make me perch on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next.
I think Mr. Edwards is a talented writer and good storyteller, but a few things kept The Magpies from getting a fourth star. I thought (and actually hoped) for some insight into the minds of the lunatics downstairs, but really, they just come off as cardboard cutout a-holes. We've all met people who enjoy making other people miserable just for the sake of making them miserable. But, I don't want to read 300+ pages about these evil drones. Give me something--some reason for their behavior that is plausible. Saying they are psychopaths just doesn't make interesting characters.I thought there might be a plot twist in the end, but there wasn't. SPOILERS So, what purpose did the whole scene with the creepy children's book author serve? Why is he important? And Mary? Where they just introduced to help lure the evil neighbors away at the end? PLOT device! "We just happened to have some extra food for a dinner party and although we know you probably hate us or suspect us of witchcraft or whatever, but c'mon over anyway." WHY would Lucy and Chris do that? And why did they not torment these neighbors? I wanted to smack the crap out of Jamie by the end of the book when he didn't leave with Kirsty. He became a mindless idiot! A loser without a job, money, wife...and he wallowed in it. Get a frickin' grip. I wonder what he told Kirsty about her half of the money they'd saved. Five thousand pounds! He took HER money!! Grrrr! I'd like to know what she said about that!! And when he finds all the evidence he needs in their apartment...instead of taking pictures or calling the police he decides to burn the place down. Yeah,at that point, I couldn't stand his whiny butt anymore. And the sex scenes? I don't want to hear where her fingers probed--this isn't supposed to be erotica. It's not that I was offended. And truthfully, it's not poorly written. It's just that all that sex didn't do anything for the plot--at all. I was hoping something would crawl out of the vent or from under the bed while her fingers probed or whatever. But, no. They just had noisy sex. And there seemed to be a lot of 'filler' scenes. A good editor might have cut some useless scenes. For example (not verbatim) this type of exchange. "Do you want to order a pizza?' "Yes, let's do that. Order it with pepperoni and mushroom." "Okay. Yes. Mushrooms are great. Maybe some sausage, too." So, I picked up the phone, dialed the pizza shop, ordered a pizza with pepperoni, sausage, and mushrooms. The doorbell rang a few minutes later and the pizza guy delivered our pizza.) WTH? Really? How about cutting all that to That night Kirsty and I ordered pizza. Would that not have been just as satisfying to the reader? A good writer like Mr. Edwards should not need to have so much filler. Even some of the sex felt like filler. Overall, the creepiness kept me interested and that's what's important. Mark Edwards does write the creepy parts very well. I would probably recommend it to a friend, but probably not one I'd get excited about telling her to read. I went back and forth between the edition and the listening to the audio when I was on my way to work. The narrator did a very good job!
