The Wicked + The Divine Volume 4 Rising Action Kieron Gillen Jamie Mckelvie Books

I just finished this book up from the library and it was a really solid read overall. It closes out what has now been a 4 volume story arc while setting up the next big arc to come. If anything, Kieron Gillen and team get the old school Vertigo format, which is pretty close to prestige TV shows like Breaking Bad, better than most. It's not the most satisfying in the sense that a ton of stuff happens really quick but on the bright side after 1 volume of buying time this thing really moving forward. It's the opposite of Southern B***ards (Amazon has flagged me in the past) that is still in buying time mode.

The illustration team is still nailing it. They get to draw a ton of fun and silly stuff here. The basic look is somewhere between 80s music video and an apple store. Add on top of that giant, daft punk groupie, neon robots battling it out with Rihanna and Kanye stand ins and you'll start to get the basic sense in your head of what's fun about this. The characters are expressive. They fit the words on the page. They still go for some interesting panel format that are pretty ambitious but still work well.

The volume is a bit rushed but I enjoyed it. It doesn't fall prey to the identity politics check listing of the last volume and it doesn't try to avoid the main narrative either. It's completely solid. Definitely on track to being Fables by Bill Willingham level interesting for me. It's a huge compliment.

I love this comic! It's a great read for those who like fantasy, or even sci fi. .
Rising action indeed! There was so much beautiful action and movement in this volume. I couldn't put it down. With each new volume, I keep wanting more and more.
Wicdiv is many things. A pop fantasy acid dream, complete with compelling characters, beautifully drawn everything, and pop culture in jokes galore. Gillen never disappoints as a storyteller, and this is some of his finest work. This arc really heats up the tension and reveals that the ride is far from over, and that we the readers have no idea what we are in for going forward.
Well made graphic novel for a good series
I love these comics!!!!
Flashbacks, backstory, blood, exploding heads and well, more missing heads. Things get crazy and you have no idea who the real "villain" is here.
Alliances are formed and some cool technology shows off what it can really do and the old crone displays her true colors and gets her own dose of Justice.
I liked getting a bit more with Minerva, and seeing some of what had been skipped over in the last two. Mainly I appreciated a certain someone coming back; she deserved her turn.
