Being True (Audible Audio Edition) Jacob Z Flores Mark Westfield Dreamspinner Press LLC Books

Truman L. Cobbler has not had an easy life. It's bad enough people say he looks like Donkey from Shrek. He also suffered the death of his policeman father and his mother's remarriage to a professional swindler, who cost them everything. Now dirt poor, they live in the barrio of San Antonio, Texas.
When Tru transfers to an inner-city high school halfway through his senior year, he meets Javi Castillo, a popular and hot high school jock. Javi takes an immediate liking to Tru, and the two become friends. The odd pairing, however, rocks the school and sets the cliquish social circles askew. No one knows how to act or what to think when Mr. Popular takes a stand for Mr. Donkey. Will the cliques rise up to maintain status quo and lead Tru and Javi to heartbreak and disaster or will being true to who they are rule the day?

Tru (Truman) is a slight, poor, white senior at a Dallas high school, which is described as bottom of the barrel, mostly ethnic, and his fourth school in as many years. With no sense of style or grooming, he is instantly branded as gay. His first day is a repeat of every other day in his miserable school life; he is harassed and beaten up. The silver lining to all this is he catches the attention of the school's star baseball player and all-around good guy, Javier, who takes Tru under his wing and becomes his first real friend since he was caught caught kissing another boy in second grade. The plot moves predictably along, with Tru fearful of exposing his gay nature as Javi lavish his good-natured attention on him. The climax and denouement are well scripted. The writing style is slightly disjointed with awkward phrasing. Frequent use of raspberries and tongue wagging seems juvenile for 17 & 18 year olds. Set in 2014, the characters are nostalgic of the 1950's. The point of view of the writer is more like a parent's than of the teen narrator.

Being True (Audible Audio Edition) Jacob Z Flores Mark Westfield Dreamspinner Press LLC Books Reviews
This story was EXCEPTIONAL! Could not put it down. The most beautiful, romantic story of first (and forever) love I've ever read. You have a new fan in me!
A great story about first loves and high school. I really liked the characters! There is nothing new about the outcast/popular jock romance, but the writer took it to a different level by making me genuinely worry about Truman and what he may face the next day. Very good read! It makes me wonder where Tru and Javi will be ten years down the road.
I really enjoyed this book. Jacob touches on bullying which is so rampant in today's schools and other places. The manner in which the bullying was written was so realistic. The characters were great. It was so easy to fall in love with Tru and Javi. The story flowed very smoothly. Jacob just has a way of bringing you along the journey that his characters are taking as you read. He is a wonderful author!
Tru and Javi are a great couple. One on the nerdy side, the other a jock. One white, one Hispanic. One very self-aware, the other still waiting to discover himself. But both gay and good-hearted. This is a very well-written and engaging gay coming-of-age and coming out novel. I sincerely hope we get a sequel. I heartily recommend this book to lovers of gay fiction.
I am always cautious when reading YA books but this one, this one was wonderful. I loved Tru's voice. I worried that the bullying would turn nasty and go horribly wrong, and while it nearly happened it resolved in a good way. I am not quite as accepting of the clique crowd turning over a new leaf like they did. However this was such a minor issue for me that in no way detracted from the story. Definitely recommend it.
Dealing with feelings of not fitting in is rough, dealing with bullies is worse . The going gets tough but these two young men both have a lot of inner strength and they bring that out when they realize they are falling in love.
There Are lots of lessons to be learned as they navigate their way through to graduation.
A sweet story of young love and new found strength for both .
A very enjoyable book. Looking for more from the author.
This was such and awesome book by a very talented author. There are so many stories within the book and all of them great.. Jacob took the theme of bullying to be one of the stories in this book. He told how there is no excuse for bullying and that there are consequences if you do that sort of thing, but also it can be forgiven. Javi and Truman make the perfect couple. The jock and the geek. This is their journey of self discovery at first becoming friends and then more than that later on. This book is an awesome book and I would urge everyone to read it as soon as possible. Too bad I couldn't give it 10 stars.
