Wizards, Queens, parallel worlds, viking-like warriors, dragons, mammoths and scary Dark Ones...this book has it all and then some and it just works. I don't know how I ever missed this series as a teen because I read a lot of fantasy back then, but I'm glad I ran across it now. Barbara Hambly has created a very interesting world with likable characters and fantastic world-building.

This is the 2nd book in her Darwath Trilogy and I see a lot of people describe this a a "transitional 2nd book" and I can see that in some ways but I personally enjoyed it even more than the first. I think the characters were more fleshed out, the world became a little clearer to me. I was never once bored and felt like anything was added that wasn't needed. I just really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it, especially if you enjoy fantasy.

Barbara Hambly writes a very evocative story. never disappoints.
I'm going through my books, if I haven't read one in a few years I'm reading it or giving it away. I'm keeping all my Barbara Hambly books. She's great
The Darwath series is wonderful. The depth and details of this world hold your attention from the first page to the last. Read them in order to get the full breath of this world. All of Barbara Hambly's books are a guaranteed wonderful read! She is on my auto-buy list.
BH has a great writing style, relaxed, flowing and yet she can build to great climaxes subtly and often quite quickly.
Good imagery and well crafted storytelling. I go back and read this series every 5 to 7 years, just because its a great read.
I am buying the Dawath trilogy for a 78-year-old friend who has discovered fantasy over the last five years or so. This is an excellent copy!
I fell in love with these books decades ago and bought copies as soon as I could. Rereading them is every bit as rewarding as the first time through.....or the second time.....or even the third time. I am blown away by the descriptions, especially the way the author paints light with words. The walls of the title refer to spell walls around the city of mages, but they also refer to the walls we build around ourselves to insulate us from other people. This is a book of learning about and breaking down walls.
Having read the previous two books, I bought this one to see if it would finally answer the question about the dark. It didn't dissappoint.

Good pts about the book It finally answered questions that were left unanswered from the previous books. The story line kept you wanting more, but you were happy to leave the characters at the place they were in their lives.

Bad I'm an avid reader but sometimes the descriptions of places or items would take a page or two just to tell you the cave was dark or the color of clothing was red. I found myself just glancing through these pages in order to get to the juicy parts of the story. Towards the end, I felt the author just wanted to finish and in just a couple of pages she closed the story without much of a build up that had been present on the previous books.

Overall, I don't think the bad ponts overtakes the good read that this book was. I would recommended it to others. Just be aware this is not a summer read... it is more like a winter read with a cup of coffee by your side.
